About My First Teleseminar
If you weren’t on my Ten Step Social Media Plan teleseminar last week, you really missed something! It was my very first time hosting a telephone conference call. Seventy people signed up, and about 15 people were on the call. Those who signed up, but couldn’t make it, got a recording sent to them later.
If you weren’t actually there, you missed a hilarious glitch (one that I edited it out of the recording!) where I muted everyone to keep the sound down, but also muted myself (mistake). I kept talking for a few minutes and thank goodness for text messaging, and someone had my back and sent a text before I went on talking to myself for too long! [click to continue…]
Those of us who got on the blogging and social media bandwagon early on, have seen first hand the power that is now available for anyone or any brand to grow their businesses online. We understand that there has been a huge paradigm shift with these free technologies that allow us to have a voice equal to anyone out there. To have a voice that is able to build or tap into a community of people in our niche that can and will help us spread the word about our services or products. It might seem to us that anyone who has not done so already is way behind. But that is not so. We have been early adapters. The majority of businesses and industries have not even begun to utilize these tools at all or effectively. It may not be too late, but it is better late than never.
I have had several clients recently, that have come to me in a state of upset. They are upset that their corporate PR job was eliminated, or that their seven year old website is no longer generating the traffic it once had, or that the Flash website that they love, is not converting visitors into clients as it had in the past. I know they are upset. Things have changed and change is hard. [click to continue…]
This week, Sarah Robinson of Escaping Mediocrity, interviewed me as a guest on a webinar for her course, Building Meaningful Online Relationships (that support your meaningful work). I talked about several key relationships that rocked my business that came about from my being active on Twitter. Actually, I find it amazing that Twitter and Facebook bring more visitors to my site than Google does, and I get a lot of Google traffic. This all happened in less than one full year of “really” being on Twitter.
One thing that stops people from staying on Twitter long enough to have the magic happen is they are not following the right people. I am going to tell you how to remedy this so you can get started with finding those people on-line that you may want to develop a relationship with in the first place.
Of course, you have to actually get on Twitter, complete your profile and [click to continue…]
Someone asked me this past week for tips, given how busy we all are how can we find balance in our lives as well as doing social media without driving yourself crazy.
First, you have to decide if you want to be a contender. You have to believe you can be and that it is in your hands and understand that it really is something you cannot hire out. You can hire help but you must direct and participate and be the one that is creating and developing the relationships.
You can’t send your assistant or your publicist to a cocktail party or networking event with [click to continue…]
I hope you are able to take some time this weekend to relax and enjoy your friends and family and count the blessings in your life. I know I am particularly grateful as I have watched the terrible tragedy unfold in Japan. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there.
Having been through a couple of devastating hurricanes, (I even lost a house to one) it seemed at the time that things would never be right again. Then last summer, I was just sick about the thousands of barrels of oil gushing out of that well, spoiling our most precious beaches, fish and animals on the Gulf coast. Yet, I have seen time and again that people are amazingly resilient and what I could not imagine being right again, did spring back. While we can’t stop natural disasters from occurring, I do fervently wish that we humans can learn [click to continue…]
A Facebook “Like Box” on your website is a great way to increase the number of people who “like” your Facebook Page (these instructions are for sharing your “Page,” not your personal “Profile” account) by allowing them do so right from your WordPress website. In this post, we have shown two options to get the “like” box on your site. One is a simple Facebook “like” box and the other a tabbed container for Facebook “likes,” Twitter feed and RSS combined.
Here are the steps for adding just a Like Box to your website. I am assuming that you already have a Facebook Page set up for your business or event. If you don’t have a WordPress site, the concept will be the same, but the directions to adding it to your site will different. [click to continue…]
Many of you know I also run a bed and breakfast and event space called the Urban Oasis and we put on lots of events here throughout the year, so this topic is very important to me. We really used Social Media to put on a super book signing for Chris Guillebeau’s Art of Nonconformity book tour. Event planners should really bone up on all the cool social media apps that will come in handy to insure the success of your next event. Here are several ideas I have used myself and a couple that I can’t wait to use ( thank you, Denise Quashie).
If you are having a large recurring event, it is best to create an easy to use WordPress website for it. If you can’t swing that then at least give it a Facebook fan page. If your gig is going to be one time only then a Facebook Group will work just fine. With a website, Fanpage or Group you can keep all of the information about the event in one central place and it will be searchable by Google and that will help to have more people find out about it outside of your own circle.
Whether you have a page or not, you should definitely get the word out on Facebook by making it into an Event on Facebook. This does not take the place of having a Page or a Group. This allows you to get it on the radar of your friends and friends of friends. But if you want people [click to continue…]
Dan Zarilla calls himself a Social Media Scientist because he spends his time documenting what is working and why in the realm of what often is what he calls “Unicorns and Rainbows” about embracing your clients by engaging with them and reciprocity and transparency and lots of other terms that sound good, are hard to argue with, but are not methodology based or able to be tested. Here is a video he did from a recent talk at Harvard.
