WordCamp Atlanta 2012 was held at SCAD on February 3-4. It was an amazing event. Russell Fair and I were co-organizers. Russell is a WordPress Developer I have worked with on our WordPress Meetup Group. We asked people who we have come to know from Meetup the past year or so, to lead each of the committees and there was a lot of collaboration on all aspects of this event. Our terrific website was designed and built by committee. One person would do their thing and pass it on to the next to add something to it. This type of teamwork brought us together and we relied upon and built on each others’ strengths.

SCAD donated the location and we were so thrilled that they did. Atlanta is a big conference town and facilities book up fast and get top dollar. WordCamps are meant to be accessible to everyone so we have to keep the price of a ticket to about 40.00. We looked high and low for a space that was large enough with breakout rooms for different tracks, that we could afford. As it was there was a 350 person limit to the number of people we could accept for the SCAD space. We told everyone to snag a ticket fast becasue we knew they were going to sell out. The tickets went on sale at the beginning of February and by Christmas we had sole about 250. After the new year we sold the other hundred in two days.

We had 39 speakers, and five tracks to accommodate beginners, users, designers and developers. There was a little something for everyone. Beginners and new users were there in force. We had about 150 people take the beginning workshops. Some people got a lot out of it and others got enough to want to get more. I warned people in my opening remarks that they might just get hooked and if they stayed in the room they couldn’t say I didn’t warn them.

One of our Meetup members, Mike Parks made this graphic to demonstrate the dangers of going to a WordPress Meetup or WordCamp. It is true. Once you try it there is no turning back.
