When someone comes to your website, you have about 3-5 seconds for them to “get” whether they want to stay or leave. I  believe that part of their assessment is whether or not they can ” know, like and trust ” you  through your website.  I have found that several factors go into building this first impression with your potential and your current clients. The Atlanta WordPress Users Group is going to be held at 130 Krog at New Tricks Atlanta Headquarters on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:00 PM. This is the 17th meeting of this popular Atlanta Meetup Group. Jack Kennard and I, Judi Knight, his new co-organizer, will give a basic presentation on how to go about getting a WordPress site up and started. I have written a recent post on moving your site from a WordPress.com site to a .org site and it pretty much outlines the material that we will cover. The presentation is planned to last about an hour including time for questions and answers.

Jack and I would like try and find a format for the group that can satisfy the diverse levels of experience in this group. So after the presentation we we will break into smaller discussion groups so beginners and more advanced members can talk about the things that are pertinent to their issue and get questions answered on both basic and more advanced topics. We are trying to work out the schedule so that there is little something for everyone.

With all of the interest and talent in our Atlanta WordPress Users’ group, we also want to give others a chance to present, so please, don’t be shy. Let us know if you have a topic you’d like to hear more about or if your would like to do the presentation for an upcoming meeting.

Some suggestions have been to have a meeting on the new features of 3.0 and another presentation on WPMU (multi-user version) and Buddy Press. So stay tuned, and keep in touch. I hope to see you Wednesday!

By Maureen Nolan. . . . My new website was designed and created by Judi Knight, of New Tricks. Judi also designed my new personal avatar and gave me marketing refocus by creatively branding  my Atlanta ADHD coaching practice to be Your Attention Coach. Judi is fun to be around during idea and web design, an experience enhanced by her unique and stimulating office environment – I hated leaving her and the loft atmosphere after the job was over. Judi has since then created the New Tricks Academy and she started a group called Catapult ( “It is our duty to Catapult each other to Greatness”) that is held in her loft office once a week. Judi’s gathers her  clients together in this stimulating work environment where we learn the new tricks of web marketing and business development. It’s important to have this kind of business follow through to teach the mechanics of web marketing. In one meeting alone, I learned how to get my web site to come up #two on the first page of my focused Google key word search.   Thanks Judi.

New Tricks was busy marketing this week on the premise that if we do our networking, and workshops in November then our December will be as busy as we want it to be. We had a great time at the Ga. Coaches Association round table meeting and the North Fulton Express Network Luncheon of the American Business Women’s Association. Good to see old friends and make some new contacts as well.

Here are our slides from both Dene’s and Judi’s presentations. The Coaches didn’t get to see Dene’s talk on Googling Yourself and other Online Marketing Tips. But both of the talks are on this Slideshare.

For those attending the workshop we are offering a free consultation on your on-line presence. We can do this by phone or in person so drop us a line or give us a call and we will get you on our schedule. We are limiting this offer to the first twenty people to respond.

Susan of Asher PR sent us a link to this very timely Twitter Tips for WordPress post on Smashing Magazine’s website. Smashing Magazine is one of my favorite sites for design tips and inspiration. Another one of our clients,  Global Girl has really taken off Twittering. Global Girl calls frequently for tips on becoming a Twitter power user and when she found Tweetdeck, she was totally hooked. After she gets a hold of these tips, we are going to have to do an intervention on her or else just start referring people to her for tips and tricks.|

This article will get anyone off to a great start using their blog with Twitter to its best advantage. The hacks to the code maybe a little risky for some beginners. So beginners, if you embark on hacks that involve changing code in your PHP files, just be sure to copy the content of the original file into a text editor first,  in case something goes wrong. Then if you make a change and your site blows up you can simply add the original file back and try again. It is really pretty easy.

I am anxious to test out the Twit This and the Twit It Up WordPress plugins. I have been meaning to add a “Twitter This” link on our posts, so this will get one more item off of my to do list. Stay tuned for which one I think works better! And let us know if you try some of these tips which you found useful and why. Happy Twittering.
